Meet Vision Art, Now Integrated with SmartAlbums for Cover Design and Direct Ordering
By: Daniel Usenko, CEO of SmartAlbums Inc.
Vision Art is a handcrafted, heirloom album lab in Marshalltown, Iowa, and it's now integrated with SmartAlbums for cover design and direct ordering in one app. You design your spreads, build a Vision Art cover with the lab's real materials, preview it in 3D, and place your order without leaving SmartAlbums.

Some of the biggest names in wedding and portrait photography print with Vision Art. Samm Blake has used them for 15 years. Jeff Chang, 10 years and counting. Nirav Patel, 13 years. These are photographers who could print anywhere. They stay.
Who is Vision Art?
Vision Art is a family-run album lab founded in 2003 by Jim and Joanie Thatcher in Marshalltown, Iowa. They were photographers, and the album they wanted for their own clients didn't exist. Most albums back then were peel-and-stick pages with bulky covers. They wanted a true lay-flat book with a clean photographic cover and a fine art feel.
So they taught themselves bookbinding. They built the album they wished they could order. Other photographers saw it and started asking for one too. That's how Vision Art was born, along with the line that defined them early on: “This is not your grandma's photo album.”
Over 20 years later, the standard hasn't moved. Everything is still handcrafted in-house by a team that cares about the result. Vision Art isn't a mass-production facility. They make a book to match nearly every style and budget.

What does Vision Art make?
Vision Art makes handcrafted fine art albums printed with true giclée quality. They print on 10-ink Epson archival printers, which give a wider color range and finer tonal detail than traditional silver halide printing. Their flagship is an uncoated matte paper with a soft fine art look. People notice the feel the moment they touch it.
The cover materials are where it gets fun. At trade shows, people stop to reach out and feel the velvet covers. The full grain leathers are a favorite too. No two are exactly alike, and each one develops its own character over time. Even the slipcases are designed with intention, so the whole piece feels considered.
Jeff Chang, a Vision Art customer for over 10 years, put it plainly: “Quality that matches the premium prices we charge.” That's the bar. A book a family keeps on a shelf for decades.

How does Vision Art keep quality high?
Vision Art builds quality control into every step, and every album passes through about 10 sets of hands before it ships. Before production starts, their customer service team reviews each order for file or design issues. They catch problems early. A misaligned cover graphic gets flagged for you before it prints, not after.
They also built their own custom ICC profiles for their printers, papers, and workflow. That keeps color accurate from your screen to the final print. The hand-binding is slower than a machine, and that's the point. It's how the album holds up as an heirloom.
James Day, who's printed with Vision Art for over 10 years, said it best: “Real people who actually look at your order and alert you of possible errors in your design or export.” That's a lab that has your back.

What does the Vision Art and SmartAlbums integration do?
The Vision Art integration lets you design covers and order albums directly inside SmartAlbums, with no separate lab portal. Start a new project and pick Vision Art as your lab. From there the workflow is simple.
Design your spreads the way you always have. Auto Build, templates, and drag-and-drop layout, with Vision Art's lab specs already loaded. Every design is print-ready from the start.
Build your cover with Vision Art's real materials. The Cover Designer pulls Vision Art's actual catalog into SmartAlbums. Velvets, full grain leathers, custom debossing. Not generic placeholders. Every choice updates in a 3D preview that shows you how the finished album will look. No more guessing what a velvet cover looks like on a 10x10. The preview matches what ships.
Order direct. When you're ready, go to export and click Start Order. Your design files, cover specs, and order details go straight to Vision Art. No file uploads. No separate ordering system. No typing the same specs twice.

Why did SmartAlbums integrate with Vision Art?
We integrated with Vision Art because they care about the photographer as much as we do. Photographers made 1.6 million albums with SmartAlbums last year. When we picked our first labs, we wanted partners who could meet that bar. Vision Art clears it.
Both companies want the same thing for you. Vision Art is a small business serving other small businesses, and they treat your order like it carries their name too. They answer the phone. They offer Zoom calls to walk you through materials and design questions. Same values, same standard. The best moments deserve the best quality.
That shared belief is why the integration works. Less friction, a better product, and more time for your next shoot.

What the integration changes for your business
The Vision Art integration changes two things that hit your bottom line. First, less risk on every order. When you see your cover in 3D before you buy, mistakes drop close to zero. A premium album costs hundreds of dollars and carries your name. Seeing it first protects both.
Second, more time per album. No switching to a lab website. No uploading files. No entering specs twice. Every minute the workflow saves goes back into your business, or your weekend.
Albums are your highest-margin product. This makes them your easiest. If you've made albums for years, this is the smoother workflow you asked us for. If you're newer to albums, this is the simplest path to a finished book we've offered.
How to try it
Update SmartAlbums to the latest version. Start a new project and pick Vision Art as your lab. Design your spreads, then go to export and click Start Order. That's where the Cover Designer lives. Pick your materials, see the 3D preview, and place your order without leaving the app.
